On Tuesday night, Ja Rule and Fat Joe shut down Madison Square Garden for the latest Verzuz. While it was a wonderful opportunity for Ja and Joe to get their flowers, Ashanti was able to steal the night with her looks and a reminder of her talent on songs by both artists. One of the biggest moments of the night was when Nelly made his way across stage in the middle of a performance to reach for a hug from his ex, Ashanti.
On Wednesday, Fat Joe took to Instagram for his Big Big Show and in a classic JoPrah moment, he brought up the hug with Ashanti on the live. Ashanti opened up and in a bit of a surprise after Ja Rule reminds the viewers that Nelly is single now, Ashanti reveals that she’s not single!
“I wasn’t expecting it… and that’s the crazy thing, it wasn’t nothing said,” Ashanti shared. “I seen his eyes get big and, I didn’t know what was going to happen, I didn’t know what to expect.”
That’s when Ja jumps in with, “You know Nelly single now?”
Ashanti comes back with, “Yeah, but I ain’t!”

Earlier in the live, Joe revealed that no less than 4 seconds after he announced the Verzuz on his IG did he receive a call from Nelly asking if he needed him to come out. Nelly made it to the show and performed “Get It Poppin’,” a number 1 record for Fat Joe, along with his own hit single, “Hot In Herre”. But Joe admitted that he didn’t know if it was all about support or if Nelly had another motive.
Ashanti also revealed that while it was a “positive moment” with Nelly, they haven’t spoken at all since the break up 6 years ago.
Ashanti wouldn’t reveal who her boyfriend was, but she was adamant that she was taken.
“It’s a lot of stuff that happened, it was a lot of stuff that’s unresolved, it’s a lot of gray area,” Ashanti cleared up before Joe shut the conversation down, reminding her that he was not Wendy Williams.
The couple broke up in 2014. Most recently, Nelly broke up with his girlfriend of 6 years, Shantel Jackson.
Meanwhile, Ashanti was linked to Flo Rida briefly after images appeared to show them vacationing together. But Ashanti denied there was any romance between the two, calling Flo Rida “my brother.”
