Verzuz may be on the decline, but for now, rappers are still excited to participate on the video series which became popular during the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. After a call for more artists out of Los Angeles, particular in the rap genre, the latest artists to step to the plate are two of Compton’s own. The Game vs YG for a Verzuz might not make sense for everyone, but with YG recently releasing an album, and The Game gearing up to drop The Documentary 3, the timing is just right, it seems.

The Game seems to have a heavy advantage. He made his debut as a member of G-Unit, and part of the Aftermath camp with Dr. Dre back in 2005 with The Documentary. It’s a classic album by all accounts with features from 50 Cent, Eminem, Busta Rhymes, and production from the aforementioned Dre. Despite a public beef with 50 Cent, which led to his departure from Aftermath, The Game still released 4 more albums in his first decade in the game, including several classic tracks and collaborations with Lil Wayne, Kanye West, Junior Reid, Kendrick Lamar, Snoop Dogg and countless others. The Game has arguably been a top 20 emcee in the 2000s, and if not for some controversies he may be much higher.

YG on the other hand released his debut album, My Krazy Life in 2014, almost a decade after The Game. While signed to Def Jam he too had a run, delivering collabs with Rich Homie Quan, Lil Wayne, Nipsey Hussle, Ty Dolla $ign, Tyga and many others, but his mainstream appeal was seemingly short lived… from the lens of a platform based in NYC. Despite a public relationship with Kehlani, he has been pretty quiet overall for the last 5 years or so.
